The xx – Tiny Desk Concert and Merriweather Post

Posted in 2dudes, 2dudes approves, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 13, 2013 by Aep22

NPR does a lot of great things.  I mean who doesn’t like to work out listening to the sweet sultry sounds of Ira Glass and This American Life…o hey there Ira

But perhaps this dude’s most favorite thing is NPR’s TINY DESK CONCERTS.  This is just pure genius.  All of our favorite bands stripped down and packed between a desk and some bookshelves.  Tiny Desk Concerts basically dares artists to show their real talent, and WOW did the xx just deliver.  These two are spot fucking on. Borrowing from Pitchfork: “Singers Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim treated the pop song like a whispered secret, an achingly intimate exchange best understood in the general vicinity of a bed.”

Perhaps more importantly for us DCers, we can now thank Governors Ball for sending the xx to the east coast, and along with that trip, allowing them to add some more right coast shows.   So mark your calendars, June 16th the xx is coming to Merriweather Post Pavillion and they are bringing Grizzly Bear with them.  THIS SHOW WILL NOT DISAPPOINT.

Join me in getting your tickets Friay at 10am.  HERE!!!!!!

Alt-J – Fitzpleasure

Happy new year everyone.  To start off the year (at least for my posting) I am reaching back to around September 2012 to the release of Alt-J’s album An Awesome Wave.  This Brit-Pop band has been in my earbuds all day and figured I would share it with you all.  Enjoy

They are playing at 930 to an already sold out crowd but perhaps you can score second hand tix if you enjoy them enough.

Father John Misty – Black Cat 10/20

Posted in 2dudes, 2dudes approves with tags , , , , , , , on October 18, 2012 by Aep22

Josh Tillman, former drummer from Fleet Foxes (good looking out JB) among other acts, is now touring as Father John Misty on the heels of his late spring release of “Fear Fun.”  Tillman sought inspiration when he “got into [his] van with enough mushrooms to choke a horse and started driving down the coast with nowhere to go.”

The album certainly shows his range on this debut album, giving the audience an opportunity to be moody and melancholy but also a chance to get up and dance.  I relate more with the latter and find the two most successful tracks off the album to be:

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings

AND

This is Sally Hatchet

**Special bonus here for an absolutely insane video.

For the DC readers, the band is coming to play the late show at the Black Cat and is shockingly not sold out yet.  I would suggest you hop on this bandwagon now, next time they come to town it will be for $30 at the 9:30 club.

See you all on Saturday

Morgan Kibby – Mountaineer

Posted in 2dudes, 2dudes approves with tags , , , , , , on October 10, 2012 by Aep22

If any of you out there went to Virgin Mobile Freefest this past weekend and caught M83’s set you were probably thinking ,”wow that girl on the keyboard has an incredible,I mean fucking incredible voice.”

You: “Andrew! How did you know I was thinking that??”

Me: “Because I was there and was blown away”

Her name is Morgan Kibby and Carles gave a solid rundown of her on Hipster Runoff.

Enjoy another one of her projects below:

Grizzly Bear – Shields

Posted in 2dudes, 2dudes approves with tags , , , , , , , on September 18, 2012 by Aep22

They slowed it down for number 4 and it works beautifully.  Grizzly Bear, the brooklyn foursome most popular for “Knife”, released their fourth album yesterday to High Praise as they were Voted Best New Music from Pitchfork and received an A- from the A.V. Club.

The band doesn’t venture too far from its roots (which have always been hard to define) but they have seemingly gone a little more minimilist for “Shields”.  This feels to me like the band wanted to showcase their traditional skills over their electronic ones.

They don’t hide their hand either, hitting the listener right away with what might be the best song off the new album, “Sleeping Ute”

For you DCers, the band will be playing 2 nights in a row at the 930 club on 9/20 and 9/21.  If you already have tickets, congratz, and if not…scour Craigslist because this is one you dont want to miss.

Until next time,

The xx – Coexist

Posted in 2dudes, 2dudes approves, Coachella, Coachella, Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on September 12, 2012 by Aep22

One of my all time favorite music experiences was Coachella 2010 as the sun was setting when the xx hit the stage.  A relatively new band at the time (only 2 years old) was the perfect fit for the coveted sunset outdoor stage.  Their haunting blend of indie pop and synth was the highlight of the weekend as thousands came running out of tents and other stages to get a glimpse of something truly beautiful.

With their long awaited sophomore album, the band continues to step on the gas.  This album is much of the same formula, which could be critics’ only knock, but I for one can’t stop listening.

Enjoy!
